Penetrant dwell time

The duration for which the penetrant remains on the material surface. It ensures that the liquid fully penetrative into even the smallest pores and cracks.

The penetrant seeps into fine cracks and pores when the surface is clean and dry. Dwell time matters: too short and it won't reach depth, too long and it can attack the base material. Stick to the manufacturer's specs for your material and the specific penetrant. With steel, be careful not to put in too much heat, or you'll alter the structure.
