Case Quenching

Case cooling is the rapid cooling of a component after welding to create a hard surface layer and prevent pore formation.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

After welding, carbon and oxygen form in the material. Rapid cooling (case cooling) causes these to react, leading to a harder structure.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Without case cooling, carbon and oxygen can combine to form pores, which weaken the material. Too slow cooling leads to a soft surface layer that is susceptible to cracking.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use a strongly cooling medium such as water or an air flow immediately after welding. Ensure that the material is immersed in the cooling medium within 10 seconds after the arc is extinguished.
