Carburizing Steel

A unalloyed or low-alloy steel with a low carbon content suitable for producing hard surface layers through thermochemical carburizing and subsequent hardening.

Case-hardening steel has low carbon content and only becomes hard on the surface through carburizing and hardening. When welding, you have to be careful not to melt away the carburized layer or heat it too much. If the steel cools too quickly, it becomes hard and prone to cracking; if it cools too slowly, it loses toughness. Best to weld before carburizing or grind off the case layer completely in the weld area.
