Elastic Recovery
Elastic recovery is the return of a material to its original shape after removal of the external force. It affects the dimensions of the plastic strain region.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Elastic springback occurs when a material stretches under an external force and that force is removed. The material structure springs back to its original shape.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
In a weld, elastic springback can cause the weld to not be perfectly rolled out. This can lead to stress zones and potential cracks. Too much plastic deformation can coarsen the material and impair its mechanical properties.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
To minimize elastic springback, ensure even heating of the weld. Use a stable cooling step and avoid rapid cooling steps. For highly plastic materials, the weld can be lightly rolled again after welding to relieve stresses.
