Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measures the frequency-dependent resistance of an electrochemical system under AC signals. It's used to investigate electrode processes and protective coatings.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The method measures the electrical resistance of an electrochemical system by applying small AC signals of varying frequencies. The resistance varies with frequency and provides information on electrode reactions and the protective layer.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy can be used to check the integrity of protective coatings on steel parts. A missing or damaged coating can lead to corrosion and reduce the material's service life. By analyzing the impedance data, materials and processes can be optimized to ensure longer service life and better resistance.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To apply electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in the workshop, special measuring equipment is required. The samples should be clean and dry to get accurate results. The frequency ranges are increased in steps to determine the resistance as a function of frequency. The data is then evaluated to analyze the quality of the coating and electrode reactions.
