Electron beam hardening
Electron beam hardening is a surface hardening method where the metal surface is bombarded with a focused electron beam. This method allows for short exposure times and minimal thermal distortion.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism
Electron beam hardening uses high-energy electrons that strike the metal surface. This energy quickly and concentratedly hardens the surface without significant thermal distortion of the part.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Electron beam hardening increases the strength and toughness of the metal surface, which is especially helpful under high loads. However, if not done correctly, excessive hardness can contaminate the material or impair its mechanical properties.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To successfully apply electron beam hardening, it is important to precisely control the energy and bombardment time. Regulating temperature and vacuum level can provide additional control. Recommended parameters are an energy of 10-20 keV and a bombardment time of 5-10 ms, depending on the specific material.
