Energy Density Modulation
Adjusting laser power and feed speed on purpose to avoid local overheating and to minimize pores and cracks.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism
Energy density modulation controls the energy distribution during welding. By carefully adjusting laser power and feed speed, you prevent certain areas from overheating. This avoids local distortion and protects the metal from unwanted chemical reactions.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Incorrect energy density modulation can lead to local overheating, causing distortion, porosity, and cracks in the material. This can impair the mechanical properties of the weld and reduce its service life.
Shop Practice & How to Do It
To implement energy density modulation, match laser power (in watts) and feed speed (in mm/s) precisely. Controlling hatch spacing is also important. For laser welding with 1000 watts, choose a feed speed of 2 mm/s to get even energy distribution and minimize porosity.
