Narrow Gap Welding

A arc welding technique designed for thick sections using narrow joint preparations with nearly parallel sidewalls to minimize fill volume.

Narrow-gap welding means: the joint faces are close and parallel, so you only need a little filler material. The trick is that the metals expand differently during welding, which makes the weld tight. Make sure you control the heat. If it gets too hot, the structure changes and the material becomes soft or brittle. If you don't control the temperature properly, you build up stress and the weld will crack. It's important that the faces are clean and fit closely. Then you weld calmly and evenly without needing much filler.
