Developer Application
Developer application is a fine-grained powder applied to a cleaned test surface to make penetrant in cracks visible.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The developer application reacts chemically with the penetrant and forms a colored compound. This compound is held in the cracks by capillary action, making it visible.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Correct application of the developer is critical for detecting cracks and penetrant indications. Incorrect application can lead to inaccurate results, increasing the risk of undetected cracks.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
1. The test surface must be thoroughly cleaned to ensure no dust particles affect visibility.
2. The developer powder is applied from a fine spray can and evenly distributed over the surface.
3. After 5-10 minutes, wipe the test surface with a soft, dry cloth to remove the powder and reveal the colored indications.
