Developer Application Time
The time during which a penetrant is drawn into a crack. For accurate dye penetrant testing, the development time must be strictly observed.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The penetrant reacts chemically with the metal and forms a visible color. The development time determines how long the penetrant is drawn out to achieve a uniform indication.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Inaccurate development time can lead to imprecise color changes. This affects the sharpness of the indication and can cause cracks to be missed or misjudged.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
The development time should be strictly followed per manufacturer's instructions. In a typical dye penetrant test, the development time is usually 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the penetrant used and crack size.
