Elevated Dislocation Density
High concentration of line defects in the crystal lattice generated by mechanical cold working, forming the basis for strengthening. It provides the driving force for recrystallization.
Cold working makes the material hard and brittle. When welding, this can lead to cracks because the stresses from the deformation are locked in the material. If you want to weld heavily deformed material, anneal it first to relieve stress or normalize it. After that, it can be processed cleanly again.
