Recovery Process
The thermally activated annealing of lattice defects and the rearrangement of dislocations without altering the original grain boundary structure. It reduces internal stresses without drastically lowering strength.
When welding, the heat changes the structure in the base material. Recovery is the first step to relieve stresses and lattice defects before recrystallization forms a new, finer grain. If you don't keep an eye on this, the component will remain stressed or embrittled. Especially with multi-pass welds or deep penetration, you have to keep the heat input under control and not let the weld cool too quickly so that the structure can settle.
