Erichsen cupping test

The Erichsen cupping test checks the formability of metals by deep drawing with a punch. The depth of the crack indicates how far the material can be deformed.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

A punch with a spherical cap is pressed into the metal being tested. The material folds and forms a crack when it exceeds its formability.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A low Erichsen value indicates low formability. This can lead to stress build-up and cracks when the material is heavily stressed. A high value means the material is more formable and less prone to cracking.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

Use a punch with a spherical cap and press it into the metal until a crack occurs. Measure the depth of the crack and compare it with reference values for the material. A value of 0.5 mm is typical for many steel grades.
