Fatigue fracture
Fatigue fracture is failure under repeated loading well below the static tensile strength. It shows a smooth crack initiation zone and a rough final fracture zone.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Fatigue fracture occurs through microscopic cracks and deformations that grow with each load cycle. The material structure is gradually weakened until it ultimately fails.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Fatigue fracture can result from insufficient mechanical properties or faulty manufacturing processes. In welding, cracks in the material can be enlarged, shortening the component's service life.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To avoid fatigue fracture, ensure high weld quality. Use appropriate materials with adequate tensile strength and do not load the component beyond its specific limits.
