Erosion-Corrosion

Erosion corrosion is the degradation of metals by mechanical wear from flowing fluids, which removes protective passive layers and accelerates attack on the underlying metal.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Erosion corrosion is caused by the combination of mechanical wear and electrochemical processes. Flowing media (such as water or air) carry small corrosion products that impinge on the metal surface. These particles abrade the passive protective layer of the metal, exposing the underlying metal and accelerating attack.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

Erosion corrosion can lead to rapid deterioration of weld seams and surrounding areas. This can cause cracks, deformation, and reduced component life. The risk is especially high in heavily stressed or chemically aggressive environments.

Shop practice & instructions

To prevent erosion corrosion, the following measures should be taken:

• Use high-quality protective coatings and corrosion-resistant materials.

• Ensure all surfaces are clean and free of corrosion products.

• Choose welding processes and materials that are stable in the specific environment.

• Regularly inspect and maintain surfaces and weld areas.
