Solidification Shrinkage Cavity

Solidification shrinkage cavities form when, during cooling of molten metal, the volume loss is not compensated by liquid feeding. They cause hardness problems and reduce mechanical integrity.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

During cooling of molten metal, cavities form when the volume loss is not compensated by liquid feeding. This process can be caused by insufficient degassing or too rapid cooling.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

Solidification shrinkage cavities can lead to hardness problems and cracking. They reduce the mechanical integrity of the component, which can result in failure or fracture in service.

Shop practice & instructions

To avoid solidification shrinkage cavities, it is important to ensure controlled degassing and slow cooling. This can be achieved by using shielding gas units or adjusting the welding process.
