Eutectic Graphite-Ledeburite Mixture

A complex microstructure consisting of ledeburite and graphite precipitations formed during the solidification of cast iron with carbon contents in the eutectic range. It determines the foundry properties of the material.

Cast iron solidifies in the eutectic range into a hard, brittle structure of ledeburite and graphite. The stuff is tricky when welding because it is hardly ductile and cracks quickly if you treat it wrong. You have to preheat the part thoroughly and let it cool slowly after welding to avoid stress buildup. Use a suitable filler and keep the heat input under control, then the weld will be usable.
