Eutectoid System

Eutectoid is the phase transition at a fixed temperature where austenite transforms into pearlite and cementite. This process occurs at a carbon content of about 0.77%.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

At a carbon content of about 0.77% in austenite, a stable phase equilibrium between pearlite and cementite forms. This transition occurs at a fixed temperature without melting.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Eutectoid can lead to increased toughness of the steel because it forms pearlite, which has better hardness and strength. However, uncontrolled eutectoid process can lead to uneven hardening and possible cracks.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To control eutectoid formation, the carbon content should be kept between 0.75% and 0.80%. Cooling must be slow to ensure even hardening. Rapid cooling can cause uneven hardening and cracks.
