Eutectoid Pearlite Microstructure
A lamellar composite of ferrite and cementite formed during the slow cooling of austenitic steel at the eutectoid point. This microstructure provides a balanced combination of strength and toughness.
Pearlite forms when steel cools slowly from the austenite region. You then get a lamellar structure of ferrite and cementite, which gives a good mix of strength and toughness.
In welding, the cooling rate is the key point. If the weld and the heat-affected zone cool too quickly, pearlite doesn't form, but harder structures like martensite do, which are prone to cracking. You don't want that.
So let the weld cool slowly and evenly after welding. If you're welding thick plates or there's a draft, it may be necessary to preheat or post-heat to keep the structure clean and avoid cracks.
