Vertical-down welding position

Fall weld position is a vertical welding method where the workpiece is welded from top to bottom. This technique allows high welding speeds and is especially suitable for pipeline applications.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Gravity assists in the fall position, pressing the workpiece. This increases the pressure and allows for even welding even on large components.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

In the fall position, it is particularly important that the weld is properly aligned and held stable. Inaccurate positioning can lead to stress zones, causing cracks or distortion. Furthermore, the workpiece must be well thought out and stabilized to avoid distortion during welding.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

• Positioning: Ensure the workpiece is held rigid and stable. Use suitable fixtures or clamping bolts.

• Welding Speed: The fall position allows high speeds, but make sure the weld does not cool too quickly. This can lead to cracks.

• Temperature Control: Keep the welding temperature constant and appropriate for the material type. Use suitable shielding layers to protect the workpiece from overheating.
