Downward vertical position

Fall position is a vertical welding direction from top to bottom, accelerated by gravity, allowing high deposition rates on thinner sheets.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The fall position uses gravity to press the workpiece. This increases the pressure and allows better deposition on thinner sheets.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

In the fall position, uneven distortion can occur if the workpiece is not pressed evenly. This leads to stress zones and increases the risk of cracks or hot cracks. Additionally, the pressure may be too high and deform the material.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use even pressure distribution and adjust the welding speed. For thinner sheets (thinner than 3 mm), the fall position is particularly suitable. Make sure the workpiece is held stable to avoid uneven distortion.
