Color Contrast Penetrant Testing
The color contrast penetrant inspection uses red penetrant and white developer to visually detect contrasting flaws under daylight.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The red penetrant is applied to the metal surface. When in contact with water or moisture, it reacts chemically and changes to a contrasting red. The white developer highlights this color change, making flaws easily visible.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
This inspection is particularly useful for detecting surface defects in welds. It can visually reveal cracks, pinholes, or incomplete fusion. However, incorrect use of the developer or excessive temperature can cause the penetrant to react incorrectly and flaws may not be visible.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
1. Prepare the metal by cleaning it and removing any dirt or oils.
2. Spray the red penetrant on the test surface.
3. Allow it to dwell for at least 5 minutes to ensure all flaws are penetrated.
4. Apply the white developer after the dwell time.
5. Inspect the metal under daylight for visual changes and detectable flaws.
