Penetrant Developer Application
Application of a fine-grained powder developer after removing the penetrant to draw the medium trapped in cracks to the surface and create a contrast for visual evaluation.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
After removing the penetrant, a fine liquid medium remains in the cracks. By applying a fine-grained powder developer, this medium is drawn to the surface by capillary action, creating a contrast between the powder and the medium.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
The dye penetrant developer application helps in visual evaluation of cracks and defects in the weld. Missing or insufficient development can lead to a blurred contrast, making accurate analysis difficult. This can cause misunderstandings in quality control and overlook potential defects.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
1. Remove all excess penetrant from the weld.
2. Apply the fine-grained powder developer to the weld to draw the medium to the surface.
3. Let the developer work until a clear contrast between the powder and the medium is visible (approx. 1-2 minutes).
4. Wipe off the developer and visually evaluate the weld.
