Liquid Penetrant Capillarity Optimization
Optimization of penetrant liquid for improved detection of micro-fine surface cracks by adjusting viscosity and wetting behavior.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Capillary optimization refers to adjusting the penetrant liquid to better penetrate micro-fine cracks. This is achieved through optimal viscosity and good wetting behavior, which keeps the liquid in tight gaps and allows it to remain there longer.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Insufficient penetrant behavior can cause micro-fine cracks to go undetected. This increases the risk of hot cracking and other damage in the weld. An optimized liquid ensures reliable detection and improves weld safety.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To perform capillary optimization, choose penetrants with a viscosity of 20-30 cSt and wetting behavior that allows a dwell time of at least 10 minutes. Regularly test the liquid for effectiveness and adjust as needed.
