Cluster of porosity

Cluster porosity: Local concentration of multiple small pores or inclusions that exceed the permitted limits and weaken the material.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Cluster porosity occurs when several small pores or inclusions consolidate in a small area. These can be caused by insufficient deoxidation, welding processes, or mechanical stresses.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Excessive cluster porosity can lead to significant weakening of the material. The material becomes less tough and is susceptible to cracking or corrosion. This can be a serious hazard, especially in stress zones.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To avoid cluster porosity, it is crucial to perform the deoxidation steps carefully and ensure that no mechanical stresses occur during the welding process. In severe cases, post-treatment or reweld may be necessary.
