Defective weld run-out
An abrupt or incomplete run-off of the weld bead at the end of the part without proper crater fill leads to lack of fusion and can cause cracks and distortion in the component.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
When welding, a weld is formed where metal molecules fuse together. An improper run-off means the weld bead is not completely filled and an incomplete fusion process remains.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
An improper run-off can cause cracks at the end of the part because the lack of fusion doesn't allow proper stress accommodation. Additionally, it can lead to distortion and reduce the mechanical strength of the weld.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
To avoid an improper run-off, ensure the weld bead is completely filled and the crater is properly filled. This can be achieved by carefully setting the welding parameters and continuously monitoring during the welding process.
