Defect Classes

Flaw classes are a systematic categorization of material flaws by type, size, and frequency for standardized evaluation of component quality. They serve as a basis for accept/reject decisions in production control.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Flaw classes refer to the categorization of material flaws based on their type, size, and frequency. These flaws can be mechanical deformations, chemical corrosion, or thermal damage.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Classifying flaws is crucial for quality assurance in welding production. Inadequate flaw classes can lead to components that are not safe under mechanical stress or corrode faster. This can result in safety risks and increased maintenance and repair costs.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

In the workshop, it is important to accurately identify and document flaw classes. This includes a precise description of the flaw, its size, and its frequency. Based on this information, one can decide whether the part is acceptable or must be rejected. It is also important to take measures to eliminate the cause of the flaws to ensure higher quality in the future.
