Disorder Energy
Disorder energy is the energy stored in crystal lattices by vacancies, dislocations, or stacking faults. It drives processes like recovery and recrystallization.
Physical-chemical mechanism
Disorder energy arises in crystals from atomic deviations from the ideal lattice. These can be vacancies, dislocations, or stacking faults. These deviations store energy, which thermodynamically drives the reduction of disorder and the restoration of the ideal crystal lattice.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
During welding, disorder energies can be increased by mechanical stress or thermal deformation. This can lead to increased strength and hardness, which impairs formability and coarsens the microstructure. In extreme cases, this can lead to cracks or splitting.
Workshop practice & instructions
To minimize disorder energies, it's important to cool the weld slowly and in a controlled manner. This prevents the rapid onset of recovery and recrystallization. For high-strength steels or under high stress conditions, continuous cooling or the use of shielding gases can be helpful.
