Moisture Content of Welding Flux

The moisture content of the welding flux influences the vapor pressure curve and the melting processes. Excessive moisture leads to porosity and hydrogen-induced cracking.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

The moisture content in the flux determines the vapor pressure curve. If moisture is too high, the melting process is delayed and pores form due to oxygen entrapment.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Excessive moisture content can lead to the formation of pores and hydrogen-induced cracking, which compromises the strength of the weld. This increases the risk of hot cracking and reductions.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

Make sure the flux is moisture-free (max 0.5% moisture). Use dry storage and check moisture levels regularly. If necessary, use dehumidified air or special drying systems.
