Hot-dip galvanizing

Process of applying a zinc coating to steel by immersing it in a bath of molten zinc. The coating provides both physical barrier protection and cathodic protection.

Hot-dip galvanizing means: you dip clean, degreased steel into a bath of liquid zinc. The zinc forms a protective layer on the steel and protects it from rust. The layer holds well because it forms a strong bond with the steel. When welding hot-dip galvanized material, you have to be careful. The zinc layer burns off during welding and produces toxic fumes. Therefore, you must grind the weld area well beforehand or remove the zinc layer there. Otherwise, you'll get poor welds and health problems.
