Flame Scarifying as Surface Preparation
Flame scarfing removes surface defects and burnt areas from cast or rolled steel, preparing the surface for further processing.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Flame scarfing uses hot oxygen-fuel jets to remove surface defects and burnt areas. The high temperatures burn the surface and release metal ions, leading to a smooth surface.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Improper flame scarfing can result in uneven surface treatment and changes in chemical composition. This can lead to weak spots, cracks, or poor weld joints.
Shop Practice & Instructions
Use an oxygen-fuel flame with a diameter of 1 to 2 mm. Hold the flame about 5 cm above the surface and move it in a straight line forward. The flame should always be perpendicular to the surface. Use a speed of about 30 cm/s and scarf the entire area to be treated.
