Flank machining
Edge preparation is the mechanical preparation of the sheet edges by milling, planing, or grinding to achieve the standard-compliant groove geometry. This improves weld quality and prevents groove defects.
Physical-Chemical Action Mechanism
Edge preparation removes surface defects and irregular edges that occur during sheet metal forming. This leads to a flatter and smoother joint geometry, enabling a better weld.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Without edge preparation, uneven edges can cause stress concentrations, leading to cracks or hot cracks in the weld. Faulty joint geometry can also lead to wear and reduced toughness of the material.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Before welding, the edges of the sheet should be machined smooth with a fine milling cutter or a planer. The milling cut should be about 0.5 to 1 mm deep and run parallel to the joint line. Accurate measurement of the joint gap is essential to ensure the weld is correct and stable.
