Edge joint weld

Flank weld: A weld along the workpiece edges that joins thin sheets and transmits little structural load.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The flank weld is formed by joining metal surfaces along the workpiece edges. The welding process joins the metallic atoms together, creating a dense connection.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Flank welds are particularly susceptible to cracks and corrosion, as they are often in stress fields and under mechanical load. Inadequate weld quality can lead to hot cracks or fracture.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

When welding flank welds, it is crucial to ensure a high welding speed and careful control of temperature. Use an appropriate welding wire diameter for thin sheets and ensure that the weld is fully covered. Minimal stress concentration and correct cooling are critical.
