High-low misalignment
Edge misalignment is the height difference between the edges of the parts to be joined in the joint plane. It causes uneven stress distribution and increases the risk of cracks.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
Edge misalignment causes an uneven load distribution on the weld. The higher edge carries more stress than the lower one, which leads to local overstressing.
Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding
Edge misalignment can lead to uneven strength and toughness of the weld. This increases the risk of cracks, especially under high stress or in materials with low toughness.
Workshop practice & instructions
Avoid edge misalignment greater than 0.2 mm. This can be achieved by careful alignment of the parts and the use of joint bars. If misalignment is detected, perform an additional weld pass or correct the part.
