Flash Butt Welding
Flash welding is a resistance butt welding process where the joint surfaces are heated by flash action with light contact pressure and a short-circuit current pulse. Then the weld is forcefully upset.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The joint surfaces are heated by a short-circuit current pulse, causing intense heating of the metals. The contact between the flanges and the workpieces ensures uniform heating.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Uneven heating or excessive heat can lead to porosity and coarsened structure. This increases susceptibility to cracks and reduces weld strength.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Make sure the flanges sit firmly on the workpieces and provide good contact. Use appropriate current and time settings for the material. Too high energy can cause overheating and porosity.
