Yield point

Yield point is the point on a stress-strain diagram where plastic deformation begins without further load increase. For steels, the proof strength is often used.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

Yield strength is the stress value at which metal deforms plastically and cannot be brought back to its original shape. This point marks the boundary between elastic and plastic deformation.

Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding

If stress levels during welding are too high, the metal can exceed its yield strength, leading to plastic failure or cracking. This is especially dangerous for steels with low yield strength.

Workshop practice & instructions

To avoid exceeding the yield strength, carefully control stress during welding. For steels with low yield strength (e.g., high-strength alloys), especially careful stress control is required.
