Fluorescent Magnetic Suspension
A liquid with magnetic particles that glow under UV light and improve contrast flaws in weld inspections.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
Fluorescent suspension consists of a liquid carrier that contains magnetic particles. These particles are so small that they can move in the suspension and are influenced by a magnetic field. Under UV light, the particles emit light and glow.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
Glowing of the magnetic particles under UV light allows more precise detection of flaws in weld inspections. This can sharply and clearly reveal cracks, pores, or irregularities. However, missing or defective UV light can cause the particles not to glow and contrast flaws are not improved.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use a fluorescent suspension with a magnetic carrier medium like water or oil. Particle size should be in the micrometer range for optimal glowing. Make sure UV light of the right wavelength (usually 365 nm) is on and the suspension is applied correctly. If no glowing, check UV light intensity and suspension quality.
