Flux Volatilization
Flux volatilization is the process where flux components change into the gaseous state. This must not occur too early in order to maintain the protective effect.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
Fluxes consist of liquid substances such as silicon or hydrocarbon. At elevated temperatures, these change into the gaseous state and can thus exchange more quickly. This improves the formation of the protective layer.
Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding
If volatilization starts too early, the flux loses its protective effect and can lead to porosity and lower strength. This increases the risk of cracks and reduces the service life of the weld.
Workshop practice & instructions
Make sure the flux is used at the correct concentration. Heating should be slow and controlled to ensure even volatilization. If there are problems with porosity, check the flux concentration and the heating process.
