Fluorine-Free Passivation
Hydrofluoric acid-free pickling is an environmentally friendly corrosion protection that avoids toxic fluorine compounds and protects users and the environment.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
Hydrofluoric acid-free pickling uses organic acids such as citric acid or acetic acid to pickle the metal. These acids react with the metal and form a thin layer on the surface that prevents corrosion.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
This method is particularly relevant in the electrolytic pickling of steels and other metals. It reduces the potential for releasing toxic chemicals and minimizes environmental impact. However, faulty application can lead to incomplete pickling, which in turn allows corrosion.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use hydrofluoric acid-free pickling products according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure the metal is clean and dry before applying the acid. Application time varies by product and material, but is usually 5-10 minutes. After pickling, wipe the metal well.
