Magnetic Leakage Field

A magnetic field that forms at defects on the component surface and attracts ferromagnetic testing particles. It makes the defects visible.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Magnetic flux leakage arises from local cross-section reductions on the component surface, which intensify the magnetic field. These reductions can result from material failure or defects like cracks or damage.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

A strong flux leakage field can indicate subsurface defects that aren't visible during welding. It can also highlight areas where material has been under high stress or is faulty. Misinterpreting these signals can lead to inaccurate inspection results and missed repairs.

Workshop practice & procedures

Always use a well-calibrated magnetic probe to detect flux leakage. The probe should be placed over a stable background to make particles visible. Ensure proper probe alignment and conduct the test in a quiet environment to minimize interference fields.
