Focused Phased Array Transducer Assemblies

Focused phased array transducers use multiple ultrasound elements that are set out of phase to produce a concentrated beam. This allows precise inspection of flat and curved surfaces at various depths.

Physical-Chemical Working Principle

Focused phased array transducers consist of an array of ultrasound transducers that are set to different phases. This phase difference causes the waves to interfere coherently at the desired point, creating a highly concentrated beam. This beam can then be focused on specific flat defects or swellings.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

This technique allows precise and detailed inspection of weld quality, including detection of flat defects and swellings. However, inaccurate phase management can lead to an unfocused beam, affecting inspection accuracy. Additionally, the system must be calibrated regularly to ensure it continues to function correctly.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To use a focused phased array transducer effectively, the following steps must be followed:

1. Calibration: Make sure the system is calibrated regularly to maintain beam focusing accuracy.

2. Phase Management: Adjust the phase difference of the transducers to achieve the desired focal point.

3. Time-of-flight: Determine the correct time-of-flight of the beam through the workpiece to achieve optimal inspection quality.

4. Data Storage: Store all inspection results and calibration data for future reference and quality control.
