Forming Gas Residual Oxygen Content

Trailing gas residual oxygen content is the amount of oxygen in trailing gas mixtures after use, to prevent oxidation.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

Trailing gases contain oxygen that is released during the welding process. Residual oxygen can remain in the weld and microstructure and lead to oxidation.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

High residual oxygen content can lead to oxidative discoloration and weakening of the steel. This impairs the strength and toughness of the weld, increases the risk of cracking, and coarsens the microstructure.

Shop practice & action instructions

Use trailing gases with a residual oxygen content below 0.1%. Check gas quality regularly and switch to fresh gas if necessary. Keep the weld under shielding gas shortly before cooling.
