Backing gas oxygen analyzer

A trailing gas oxygen analyzer is an electronic measuring device that continuously monitors the residual oxygen content in the root shielding area during welding.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

The trailing gas oxygen analyzer measures the concentration of oxygen in the environment where the workpiece is formed. This is important because excessive oxygen can oxidize the metal surface, leading to corrosion and loss of strength.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Excessive oxygen can cause the formed workpiece to corrode or discolor on the surface. This can affect the quality of the final product and lead to additional costs. Therefore, it is important to continuously monitor the oxygen content and adjust as needed.

Shop practice & action instructions

Use the trailing gas oxygen analyzer to continuously measure the oxygen content in the root shielding area. The recommended oxygen concentration is typically between 10% and 20%. If the measurement shows that the oxygen content is above or below this range, adjust the trailing gas supply to achieve the optimal value.
