Forming Gas Displacement Volume
Purging gas displacement volume is the calculated gas volume needed to completely replace the ambient atmosphere in a closed cavity with shielding gas. This ensures a clean welding zone and prevents contamination.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
The purging gas displacement volume is calculated based on the volume of the cavity being welded. It indicates how much shielding gas is needed to completely displace the surrounding atmosphere and establish a clean welding environment.
Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding
If the purging gas displacement volume is too low, the ambient atmosphere cannot be completely displaced. This leads to contamination of the weld and increases the risk of cracks or corrosion. A volume that is too high means unnecessary gas consumption and can lead to unwanted pressure anomalies in the system.
Workshop practice & instructions
To calculate the purging gas displacement volume correctly, multiply the cavity volume (in cubic meters) by a safety factor of 1.2 to 1.5. This factor accounts for possible losses due to leaks or pressure drops. For example: a cavity with a volume of 0.5 m³ requires a purging gas displacement volume of at least 0.6 to 0.75 m³.
