Forming gas monitoring
Forming gas monitoring is the continuous measurement of oxygen content inside the pipe during forming, to prevent oxidation and ensure weld quality.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Forming gas monitoring involves continuously monitoring the oxygen content inside the pipe. A too high oxygen content can cause oxidation of metal surfaces, which impairs strength and mechanical properties.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Oxidation during forming can lead to porosity and loss of strength. This increases the risk of cracks and reduces the service life of the weld. Insufficient monitoring can therefore lead to poor quality results and potential component failure.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To ensure effective forming gas monitoring, the oxygen content inside the pipe should be kept below 1% at all times. This can be ensured by using shielded gas lines and correct gas supply. If the oxygen content rises above 1%, the forming process must be adjusted or interrupted to prevent further oxidation.
