Fill Pass

A fill pass involves laying weld beads between the root and cap passes to fill the remaining joint volume. This ensures a dense and homogeneous weld.

Physico-chemical mechanism of action

The fill pass is an important part of the welding process, where weld beads are placed between the root and cap passes. These beads fill the remaining joint volume and ensure a tight connection.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

A missing or insufficient fill pass can lead to porosity, unevenness of the weld, and low strength. This increases the risk of cracks and reduces the service life of the joint.

Workshop practice & instructions

To ensure a good fill pass, the following steps should be taken:

1. Make sure the joint volume is fully prepared before applying the beads.

2. Use the right number and size of weld beads to fill the joint volume.

3. After welding, check the quality of the fill pass by visual inspection or ultrasonic testing.
