Groove Cross-Sectional Area
The total area of the joint preparation prior to welding that determines the volume of weld metal to be deposited. It correlates directly with the thermal distortion of the component.
The joint cross-sectional area is the cross-section of the weld groove, i.e. the space you have to fill with weld metal. It results from the groove shape, root gap and material thickness. If the area is too small, you won't get proper penetration and the weld won't carry. If it's too big, you need unnecessarily much weld metal and the part warps faster due to heat. So you always have to adapt the groove to the material thickness and the desired weld, then the heat input will be right.
