Joint Volume Minimization
Minimizing the groove volume reduces the included angle and the root face to save weld metal and avoid thermal distortion.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Reducing the groove volume decreases the contact area between weld passes. This minimizes thermal distortion because less energy is required to fill and melt the groove gap.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Too large a groove dimension leads to increased weld metal consumption and can cause thermal distortion and uneven cooling. This can result in cracks, defects, or poor weld strength.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To minimize groove volume, aim for an included angle of 60-75 degrees and a root face of 1.5 to 2 times the material thickness. For steel structures, use a root gap of 0.3 to 0.4 mm. This ensures efficient welding and minimizes risks like cracking or defects.
