Galvanically Isolated Joint

Galvanically separated joints prevent contact corrosion between different metals by using electrically non-conductive interlayers. The electrical circuit is interrupted to avoid corrosion.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Galvanic corrosion occurs when two different metals are in contact with an electrolyte and an electric current flows. The galvanically separated joint interrupts this circuit by using insulating materials such as plastic as an interlayer.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Without a galvanically separated joint, contact corrosion can occur, which shortens the service life of components and impairs their mechanical properties. Corrosion leads to cracks and deformation that weaken the material.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use galvanically separated joints when assembling metals with different galvanic potentials. Ensure that the interlayer is complete and tight to prevent a closed circuit. Use materials such as plastic for the interlayer and regularly check the integrity of the joint.
