Gamma Stabilizer
Alloying elements such as nickel or manganese that stabilize the face-centered cubic austenite lattice over an extended temperature and concentration range.
Gamma stabilizers keep the austenitic structure stable and prevent it from transforming into hard, crack-prone martensite during cooling. When welding, this means: if you process such alloys, you have to control the cooling, otherwise the weld will become brittle and crack. Make sure the part does not cool too quickly, but can cool slowly and in a controlled manner. Which filler material or heat treatment is needed depends on the exact alloy – if in doubt, look it up rather than guess.
